Our Tax Dollars At Work

For those of you in Southern California, you may have heard about this story. (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-animals10oct10,0,7791874.story?coll=la-default-underdog

Basically, it boils down to somewhere between $450,000 and $1,400,000 of transportation related tax dollars being spent to make a bridge over the 405 for animals! Seriously??? It goes in to discussing how these animals need to have a way to get from one side of the freeway to the other. Because???

The radio show I listen to was making fun of the signage they'd need for this...would it be in English? Would it just show pictures of animals crossing the freeway so they could understand? And this IS So Cal...so would we also need multi-lingual signs available as not to offend any bobcats who have immigrated from south of the border? My favorite quote in the article is a community member who said, "What are they going to do, have Doctor Dolittle standing there directing animals to use the bridge?"

This is one of the types of things that makes me nervous for this country. If this is the type of thing that lawmakers are debating and worrying about...we are in BIG trouble!!

I agree with you on the Dr. Dolittle thing--because, really? How would you do that? Big neon arrows? And what's to stop people from crossing on the animal path if it's decorated in a nature theme? The first thing I thought when I read that was "Oh! It's like a little Hike--that could be fun." And if people are using the animal path, wont the animals get scared? Doesnt that defeat the purpose?
I'm also shocked to see that 62.3% of the 1930 people who answered the question "Is a wildlife lane over the 405 Freeway a good use of California transportation dollars?" said yes. (Dear 62.3%-you know who you are, Why would you think this is a good use of CA transport $$$? Do you live in a cave? And if so, are you an animal? How did you learn to read english? OH! How did you learn to type?!? Love, Heather)
