JITT

Thanks to my coworker, Aaron, I may never be able to look at one of my favorite paintings the same way again.

Some of you may remember my little soul-searching, solo trip to Chicago last year. While I was there, I got to see A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat in person. I was amazed at how large it was - practically life-sized. The scene just seemed like such a nice and fun place. I wanted to step in to the painting and be a part of it. I'm not an art expert or anything, but to me, when a viewer wants to step into a painting, that's good art. I have a small print of it hanging at my desk at work so I can step in to it whenever I'm having a bad day.

Here's where my office mate comes in. As you can see, the larger female figure on the right has a rather large, shall we say, "bustle". It does seem even more pronounced than necessary, but obviously a bustle. One day, Aaron said something about how the woman in the painting has A LOT of Junk In The Trunk (JITT for short). So now this very famous painting has been reduced to a slang phrase that Georges Seurat (if he spoke English) would have thought meant that there was some garbage in the steamer trunk!
Rachel - perhaps this could be the subject of your next satirical painting?

I've always loved this painting also. So, you know Seurat was all about pointalism (is that what it's called -- I'm not the professional artist, you know), and a guy I knew in college saw a painting of his in my apartment and asked, "is this one of those paintings where you have to cross your eyes to see something good." Let's just say he wasn't the brightest banana in the bunch.

I LOVE this painting and I'm so jealous you got to see the real thing!

Did you tell your office mate that it's a bustle? Or was it not worth the hassle?

Hi Laura- I found your blog through Shaunna, she just barely told me that you moved back to California. Sounds like you are doing well. I read all your posts, I loved the one about "Brad", you are funny.

Hey baby!

I love this painting too - ever since Ferris Buellers Day Off (and my art history class in high school). Hope all is well!
