Childhood Games

This is for Amanda (well, everyone else can read it too, but she asked for it).

Do you remember what your favorite childhood board games were? I loved Candy Land...probably because I wanted to eat it all! We played that with Reagan at Christmas this year (I think she cheats, because she won just about every round)! Though when my mom won a game, Reagan very adamantly pronounced "I don't want to play this anymore"!

One of the most traumatic memories of my childhood revolves around a board game. I believe it was my 8th birthday and all the relatives were over to celebrate. My brother and I were the only kids there. I was dying to get the game Hungry, Hungry Hippos (do we see a theme, here). Do you guys remember that game? There was a square board with these little plastic hippos in each corner, then all these white marbles would come out and you had to get your hippo to eat the most of them.

Well, I was thrilled when I opened the present and there it was! And then my little dreams were dashed when all the adults completely took over and started playing and wouldn't let me play! They were having so much fun with it, that they pretty much edged me out of my own game...on my birthday!!

Yes, I'm still bitter.

When we were in New Hampshire in September, we were at Fun Spot (which is this famous video game place for those of you that don't know). Anyway, they had this huge table-sized version of Hungry, Hungry Hippos and Mike played with me. He won. Rats!

Another childhood game has come back in to my life. One of my Christmas presents from Mike was the updated version of the classic Trouble (complete with the Pop-O-Matic dice rolling thingy in the middle). Who remembers this one? I still love that popping sound as the dice rolls. Sadly for me, Mike is the current reigning Trouble Champion of the World. However, I am currently in training and planning my comeback!

What were your favorite childhood board games?

Great topic Laura. When I was younger, my brother and I would play games like Stratego and Battleship. I just thought they were fun guessing games. I wasn't quite the sharpest tack in the box or I would have taken a hint from the name 'Stratego' in realizing that there was actually strategy behind it.
Well, fast forward many years and I was dating Gray. We were at the store and thinking that we had a long togetherness ahead, bought the Collector's Edition of Stratego. I was ecstatic. That lasted until our first, second and third game when half way through he would announce that he had won. I was floored. I still didn't get it. Then he proceeded to explain how he knew that and exactly where my General was, etc.
Being the highly competitive, yet completely untalented person that I am, I couldn't let it go. I not only stopped playing with him, but also let him know that if we were to have any future, Stratego was to be outlawed. Not that that was the reason we didn't last, but any guy that I could ever really take seriously, would let me win or at least let me cheat! :) Fun times.

Camille, Casey and I just had a very intense game of Pop-o-matic Trouble a few weeks ago. I love that game.

I loved playing Life. And that one game with the faces and you had to ask questions like, "Does your person have a mustache?"

But I HATE Monopoly. I never win.

I loved Mousetrap. My grandma had it and it was so fun to put together and play the game. Also, I loved playing Life. It was fun thinking I could be a lawyer and earn $50,000 and drive around the whole town with my handsome husband in the passenger's seat. Finally, I loved playing King Leonardo with my grandma. I don't even remember the game, but I loved the memory.

Love all the ones you've mentioned. I was also a fan of Shoots and Latters, and Chinese checkers.
