Last weekend, Mike and I were watching E.T. on HBO. I haven’t seen that movie in YEARS! It was fun to watch it though, and remember the 80s! I totally cried when E.T. was in that little chamber thingy.
As we watched, we were reminiscing about Reese’s Pieces and how we remember when they first came out, the story of how M&Ms was offered that spot in the movie but turned it down, and we ended by debating the greatness of Reese’s Pieces vs. Peanut Butter M&Ms (I say PB M&Ms are WAY better because they have chocolaty goodness, and Reese’s Pieces don’t).
Anyway, we were at the store the next day and saw these boxes of Reese’s Pieces. It was so funny since we were just talking about them so we got a box. For some odd reason I decided to look at the ingredients. I don’t normally do that because I don’t really want to know. I prefer to keep it in my mind that because they have peanuts in them, and peanuts are a plant, then they’re a veggie (a root vegetable if you will), therefore Reese’s Pieces are good for you. And if I look at the ingredients, my perfect little veggie world is shattered!
But…I did look…and you know what the first ingredient was? Partially Defatted Peanuts. I am NOT joking. What does that mean exactly? Like some trainer at Reese’s took the peanuts and said “Peanuts…you’re too fat, you need to go on a diet and de-fat yourselves (but only partially, or you will be unmarketable)”?
I’m totally picturing a trainer, like Jillian on The Biggest Loser, standing there in front of a bunch of peanuts in workout clothes, yelling at them telling them to de-fat!
Now…if we could only figure out a way to de-fat me (and I don’t mean by exercising and eating right, because that’s no fun)!

I didn't picture a trainer. I pictured a little time liposuction machine.
And it's not even a contest. PB M&Ms win. But I do love Reese's Pieces.
And can I just mention how much it bothers me when people pronounce it "ReesEE's". I'm sure you say it the right way.
Reese's Pieces are a waste of good calories. No offense to those who like them. I just really don't. I'm not much of a fan of just peanut butter. Candy coating does nothing to enhance peanut butter. You must have chocolate with the peanut butter for it to classify as an edible confection in my book.
I'm actually impressed that the first ingredient is peanuts of any kind - fat or thin. You usually find out it's something totally disgusting, like lard - with artificial peanut flavoring and Yellow dye #4.
I agree about Peanut Butter M&M's. My favorite. My question is, can anyone find the large bags? I only ever see the small single portion size. Not that I need a large bag, but still. I can never find one.
Ok, old guy alert:
They don't taste as good as they used to! They changed the recipe. Reese's Pieces used to be peanut-buttery-er, but they changed the peanut butter into a more sugary, disolving, chemical taste. I'm serious. Me and Laurie complain about this all the time. Remember when Trix used to taste like food? Now, same thing, it's this dissolving, sugary taste. I'm just saying...
