It's never been a secret that people who hum and whistle in public bug me. There are a few exceptions to this (the mailman, for example), but generally, it's very irritating to me. There's a lady at work that hums in the restroom. I'm not sure if she just enjoys humming, if it's a nervous habit or if she's trying to make other noises to cover up bathroom noises. Either way, it bugs me. It's also no secret that I have control issues, so this might be part of the reason. If a song comes on the radio that I don't like, I can turn it off. If Humming Lady comes in to the bathroom, it's not like I can turn it off. Oh, how I wish I could!
Whistling pretty much falls in to the same category as humming. I think there may be some jealousy involved in this one because I couldn't whistle to save my life! Some people are very talented whistlers. There was a man at the grocery store a couple months ago that was whistling some pop songs, a little classical with a few show tunes thrown in. Everything was recognizable. He must have known how I am because every time I went to a different aisle, I could hear him coming! I tried to get away, but we must have been shopping for the same items! I should have gone on to the female aisle to see if he was following me!

years ago I decided that I wanted to learn to whistle. So, I practiced quite a bit. (In private) and I thought I got pretty good. I was wrong. Anytime I start whistling now, John just starts laughing. The problem is that I just worry about whistling the tune and not the notes. He can do both and drives me crazy. You will be happy to know that I have pretty much stopped whistling!
I have mixed feelings about whistling and humming. I know I do them myself, but normally when I'm alone. So, I like them.
But, on the other hand, my office-mate LOVES to hum, and it drives me insane. Most of the time I want to through a pen at her.
I know I hum a lot, but I try not to do it in public. As a non-whistler, though, I get really jealous when I hear people whistling. Have you noticed that as soon as you tell someone you can't whistle, they feel the need to start whistling and continue for much longer than is ever needful. Yeah, that helps me a lot in my desire to learn. And does it totally bug you when they say, "All you have to do is blow." Really? I never thought about that before.
Katie - yes, I've noticed how people who can whistle give really lame advice and also show off their skills as soon as I say I can't whistle. For those of you that applies to, please stop!
