Generics

I used to be a brand name snob when it came to groceries.  I would only buy Skippy peanut butter, Philadelphia cream cheese, Kraft cheese, S&W canned beans, etc., etc.  A few years ago I started to loosen up on certain things, but when I met Mike, I started to loosen up even more.

We would go grocery shopping together, and he would go grab the generic brand of some product.  So, I'd just go with it...and that's how I discovered that most things are just fine in their generic state.  Now granted, if you put a can of S&W kidney beans right next to Ralph's brand kidney beans, you could definitely see the difference.  However, since they're never right next to each other, the generic is fine most of the time, especially considering the substantial savings on most things.

I have discovered 3 products so far where the generic brand was inferior enough that I will never buy them again.  They are:

- Ralph's brand graham crackers
- Ralph's brand sweetened condensed milk
- Ralph's brand jarred marinara sauce

What has your expereince been with generic items?  Anything you like or don't like?

I know, this post is very deep today!!

Name brand must haves:
Tide, Dawn, graham crackers, garbage bags, sandwich bags, bread, Oscar Mayer bacon, and most cookies. Most everything else I'll buy generic. Sometimes if the product is fine, the packaging stinks, so I buy name brand maple syrup and ketchup because I hate it when the lid snaps off after the first use. Name brand Mint Oreos make me happy. Now I'm hungry.

Well, this isn't a food item, but I won't buy generic paper products - tissues, paper towels. toilet paper, napkins...all of those. I also do not like generic canned soups. Not even for mixing in a casserole or something. Campbell's only. I agree with the pasta sauce also. And salsa. And tortilla chips. And yogurt. You know, some things I actually prefer in the generic brand - like Frosted Flakes Cereal.
